Somerset Sportshall Athletics 2015 - REPORTS


UNDER 11 SOMERSET ATHLETES FROM ACROSS THE COUNTY COMPETED IN THE FUN IN ATHLETICS REGIONAL SPORTSHALL CHAMPIONSHIPS AT THE WEEKEND!


























4 teams of year 4, 5 and 6 athletes from across Somerset travelled to Wellsway School Sports Centre at Keynsham to represent the County at the Fun In Athletics Regional Sportshall Championships at the weekend.


There were many gutsy performances in both individual and team events and all the athlete competed with enthusiasm and determination against some very tough opposition.


The Girls “A” Team - The Somerset Spartans, produced a brilliant performance to finish 3rd behind the Gloucestershire All Golds with a difference of just 11 points!

The Boys “A” Team - The Somerset Spartans, competed really hard and were rewarded with 2
nd place behind the Avon Crusaders, one place higher than last year and just 14 points behind the winners.

Championship best performance amongst the girls came from Isabelle Locke who was placed 1st in speed bounce with a very nippy score of 56. Other top  four places went to: Lydia Smith who came 2
nd in chest push with a distance of 6.75m; Caitlin Pike came 2nd in standing triple jump with a distance 5.52m; Isabelle Locke came 3rd in standing triple jump with a distance of 5.34m; and Anna Hooper came 4th in target throw with a score 10.


Championship best performances amongst the boys came from: George Heather who was placed 1st with a vertical jump of 48cm; Luke Rendell was 1st in javelin with a best throw of 19m; Jake Fouracres was 1st in chest push with a throw of 7.0m; Ben Clarey and Joshua John were 1st = in the balance test with a score of 60. Other top four places went to: Edward Richards who came 2nd in standing triple jump with a distance of 5.78m; Riley Swash came 2nd in target throw with a score of 10; Archie Jones and George Heather were 2nd = in speed bounce with a score of 50; Fabian Edgar came 4th in standing triple jump with a distance of 5.72m; Lewis Brookes came 4th in chest push with a throw of 6.50m; James Bamford came 4th = in speed bounce with a score of 49.


In the 8 track events, the girls won 2 events, had 4 second places, 2 third places and 1 fourth place. The boys won 2 events, had 3 second places, 2 third places and 2 fourth places.


The two “B” teams, the girls and boys Somerset Saracens both came 6th. The girls team was not up to strength and had a number of young athletes but they put up a very fierce fight to finish just 28 points behind the Gloucestershire All Stars. The boys team also put up an impressive fight and increased their score on last year finishing just 28 points behind Gloucestershire All Stars.

UNDER 13 SOMERSET ATHLETES IN THE SOUTH WEST REGIONAL SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS FINAL.































Following selection and training events in Yeovil, 24 athletes from across the county travelled to Torbay Leisure Centre at the weekend to represent Somerset in the South West Regional Sportshall Athletics Final. All the athletes competed with enthusiasm and determination against some very fierce competition.

The under 13 girls team made a massive improvement on last year’s result moving from 5th place with a score of 389 points to 3rd place this year and a score of 506 points. There were many awesome performances in both individual and team events.

Championship best performances amongst the girls came from: Ella-Mae Wright who was placed 1st = with a speed bounce score of 86.

Other performances of note were from: Ellie Carrow who was 2nd in standing triple jump with a distance of 6.37m; Jemima Johnson was 2nd in standing vertical jump with  a height of 53cm; Katie Cleal was 4th in shot with a best throw of 7.80m.

The under 13 boys team, many of whom were in their first year in this age group found themselves up against some really tough competition from the other teams. Despite this they fought hard and managed to increase their score from last year to a total of 429 points for 5th place.

The best performance amongst the boys came from Archie Tyler who came 4th = in speed bounce with a score of 76.
